Rose Whisper is conceived as a poetic box, a piece that slowly reveals itself as the retablo opens. Inside, three sculptural roses handcrafted from Peruvian aguayo fabric emerge against a softly painted sunset sky, one at the centre and two at either side, creating a quiet and intimate world within.
On the exterior, sculptural roses form the silhouette of a hummingbird, a symbol of life and a messenger between worlds. Around it, layers of red roses are painted in oil with translucent glazes, creating depth and the feeling that some are appearing while others are fading away.
Opening the retablo becomes part of discovering the work, moving from its richly painted exterior towards the more intimate world held inside, like something quietly waiting to be revealed.
