My Heart...Your Heart begins with a sunset, originally captured in a photograph by my husband and inspired by the colours of the Peruvian highlands. Painted in soft violet and pink tones, the sky surrounds the chacana, an ancient Andean symbol of balance and connection.
At its centre, dozens of small roses handcrafted from Peruvian aguayo fabric come together to form a heart. Each rose is individually shaped, bringing colour, texture and the presence of something made slowly by hand.
The piece opens and closes like a Peruvian retablo. When open, the heart is revealed; when closed, the outer panels come together and the roses remain visible on each side. This movement between inside and outside gives the work its title: My Heart...Your Heart.
We all carry our own stories, memories and affections within us. Perhaps that is where one heart can recognise something of itself in another.
